Samuel Holden (1800-1860) was a British artist who painted and created prints of orchids in the 1800s. He was a prolific artist who painted many new species of orchids from Asia, Central and South America. Painted and created prints of orchids for horticulturalists, including Joseph Paxton, the Loddiges family, and James Bateman. Studied plants in the private collections of many collectors in Great Britain. Often signed his works with details of the location and owner of the plants
The V&A’s collections include works by Holden. Works by Holden have been auctioned, including botanical chromolithographs and hand coloured botanical lithographs.
