Mapleton Art Trail

Be amazed by the quality and variety of the Art in Public Spaces throughout Mapleton.

Welcome to the Mapleton Art Trail. Over many years, art has been added to the streets of Mapleton. corrugated iron sculptures, murals, artwork prints and designer chairs.

The ‘Art in Public Spaces’ is a living project as things come and things go.

The brochure was first printed but became out of date as fast as we could print. Hence, scan this QR code and see the latest.

 Walk the streets of Mapleton and drive a few blocks to discover the creativity of the northern Blackall Range residents.

Quirky and clever, the sulphur-crested cockatoo is one of Australia’s most likeable birds with a personality that’s often larger than life.

Danaus plexippus

Are among the best known of the world’s butterflies, due to their remarkable ability to migrate, its wide distribution, and the charismatic appearance.

Butterfly panels

Three panels featuring local butterfly species. Local plants are included as they are these are preferred by the caterpillars.

A flat-stemmed wattle

Acacia complanata

An interesting and eye catching wattle with bright yellow ball flowerheads. A shrub to 4m with flat stems. Prefers sandstone soils. Australian king parrots enjoy the seed.

Imperial blue

Lays its eggs on wattle species of this region. But females will only lay eggs on host plants that have the right species of ants. The caterpillars secrete a substance which the ants like. The ants provide protection from predators. This is why the caterpillars can feed freely during the day time.

Beautiful flame tree

Brachychiton acerifolius

A deciduous tree to 35m tall. Bright red bell-shaped flowers during spring to summer that often cover the whole tree when it is leafless. The large long oval, woody pods create problems for mowers.

Koala

Phascolarctos cinereus

Eucalyptus dependent marsupial native to Australia with powerful jaws for chewing tough leaves. Strong claws for climbing and holding on while sleeping in trees. Koalas have fingerprints, like those of humans which are unique for each individual.

Copper bearded orchid

Calochilus campestris

A tiny plant that ‘eats’ insects – an insectivorous orchid. The artist has magnified the flower by 6 times. This allows you to see the exquisite details of the flower.

Xanthorrhoea grass tree

Xanthorrhoea latifolia

Sometimes without a trunk but can form a tree to 2m tall. The flowering stem may be 1.5m tall. The cream white flowers attract birds and insects. In this region, the scarlet honeyeaters favour this plant.

White-cheeked honeyeater

Phylidonyris niger

A species of honeyeater that inhabits gardens and paperback swamps and forests. It has a large white patch on its cheek, brown eyes, and a yellow panel on its wing. Not common in this region but welcomed when sighted.

Native blue banded bee

Amegilla cingulata

Blue banded bees are amongst our most beautiful Australian native bees. They are about 11mm long and have bands of metallic blue fur across their black abdomens. Blue banded bees are solitary bees. This means that each female bee mates and then builds a solitary nest by herself.

Unusual bladderwort

Utricularia lateriflora

A very small water plant. Rarely observed.

Eastern water dragon

Intellagama lesueurii

Water dragons have rough scales, sharp spines and ancient features  that resemble fairytale dragons. A couple of these dragons enjoy ‘reading’ as they are often found amongst the books in this Library.

Little green tree frog

Litoria caerulea

A  bright green tree frog with a robust broad body and short limbs. Green tree frogs wipe a waxy secretion over themselves to conserve moisture loss during the day.

Viola hederacea

Leaves tufted along numerous creeping stems. Flowers are delicate purple and white. Picks well and holds for a number days in a vase.
